Oct. 15--Writing the Future of Bullying: It Really Can Get Better
from 9 AM - 12 PM at UTSA-Downtown
Keynote Presentation by Dr. Roxanne Henkin
How can teachers support all students who are bullied? In this session, we’ll share strategies and lessons that help students become allies for their classmates. We’ll share effective literature, videos and writing strategies that assist students confront bullying and harassment and empower them to write a brighter future. Additional teaching demonstrations on using literacy for social equity and justice will be presented.

Nov. 5--Turning Back, Turning Forward: Reflection in the Writing Classroom
from 9 AM - 12 PM at UTSA-Downtown
Keynote presentation by Dr. L. Lennie Irvin
Many teachers avoid using reflective assignments because they take extra time and seem to have questionable results. This Saturday will feature presentations revolving around the use of reflection in the writing classroom to help students learn and grow as writers. Building on various theorists of reflection such as John Dewey, Kathleen Yancey, and Donald Schon, this workshop will focus on practical ways to make reflection work in your classroom.

Dec. 4--Cuentos Project Open Mic Reading and Celebration
from 1-3 PM San Antonio Public Library--Downtown--More
Teachers and their students engaged in the Cuentos Project of telling family stories will share some of the stories they have written in a public reading. This event celebrates young writers and the power of story. This event is free and open to the public. --More
Feb. 4—San Antonio Writing Project’s Sixth Annual Teacher’s Conference
Avoiding Writicide: Valuing Writing in Tough Times
Keynote Presentation: Jeff Anderson
from 9 AM - 12:30 PM at UTSA-Downtown
In times of tight budgets, constricted and even scripted curriculums, and low teacher morale, teachers need more than ever ideas and inspiration to spark confidence and a love for writing in today’s students. This Conference will offer sessions where San Antonio Writing Project Teacher Consultants will share activities they have used in their classroom for the teaching of writing. Jeff Anderson will also present a keynote session at this conference.

March 3—SAWP Writing Marathon
from 9 AM - 12 PM; Location TBA
Join fellow writers and teachers for a morning of walking and writing and fun. Marathoners start together and then walk in any direction they choose, writing as they go, and then return to share what they wrote. Participants need good walking shoes and clothes appropriate for the weather. This event is free and open to the public. --More
