Crossing to College:
What is College-Readiness in Writing? and How Do We Get There? -- July 19-23

This workshop is free for teachers thanks to the generous support of the Educational Service Center, Region 20; UTSA; and Alamo Colleges

An Open Institute focusing on preparing high school students for college writing

This Open Institute proposes to bring college and high school teachers (as well as Adult Education teachers) together, following the National Writing Project’s principles of "teachers teaching teachers," to talk about college readiness in the area of writing. Many students pass TAKS and graduate high school or get a GED, yet when they apply for college they are placed into Developmental English classes. What can be done to increase the number of students who graduate high school and place directly into Freshman Composition?

At this institute participants will explore the recent definitions of College Readiness in English as defined by the newly adopted Texas College and Career Readiness Standards and try to ground some of these standards in specific practices from the College English classroom. The current status of work related to the Texas College and Career Readiness Standards will be reviewed. Participants will read the recent National Council of Teachers of English book What is College-Level Writing? edited by Patrick Sullivan, as well as experience Teaching Demonstrations from Teaching Consultants from the San Antonio Writing Project who teach College English. Participants will also bring a writing lesson geared toward college readiness that they wish to work on to the Institute, and during the Institute they will work on refining this lesson in collaboration with their co-participants and the Institute leader.

Institute Leader: Mike Moran, Teacher Consultant of the San Antonio Writing Project and Associate Professor of English at St. Philip's College.

Who Can Participate? High school or middle school teachers who wish to learn more about the practice of teaching writing and how to prepare their students for college writing.
